Study I, II & III acrylic on canvas |
Ville Andersson is known for his refined works that he realizes with many different techniques. He strives to find the most natural form of expression for his thoughts and ideas, and on the other hand to study how different mediums and techniques influence his work. In this exhibition Andersson presents for the first time a selection of sketches and studies that record the development of an idea before the finished work of photographic art. The starting point for his artwork The Wave, 2016 has been drawings executed in pencil and ink as well as paintings in acrylic. The final fine-art photo is realized in a studio environment, and it is preceded by a careful design and preparation of the set. The sketches offers the viewer a glimpse into the precise planning even before that.

‘I could fly to New York and back every day for seven years and still not leave a carbon footprint as big as if I have a child. Ten thousand tonnes of CO2. That’s the weight of the Eiffel Tower. I’d be giving birth to the Eiffel Tower"
In a time of global anxiety, terrorism, erratic weather and political unrest, a young couple want a child but are running out of time. If they over think it, they’ll never do it. But if they rush, it could be a disaster. They want to have a child for the right reasons. Except, what exactly are the right reasons? And what will be the first to destruct – the planet or the relationship?

ARTEK |
As a part of 2021 Helsinki Design Week's programme, Helsinki Contemporary brings to the Artek Helsinki store works specifically created for the space by Ville Andersson.
Andersson’s works combining drawing and vinyl stickers are created on carefully selected, tinted papers. The delicate and airy works move in a dialogue between the organic and the graphic, with a quiet and minimalistic touch.
Artist about the new works:
I often work around certain key words and themes. In February, I presented a large new series of works at Helsinki Contemporary. Monumental wastelands and deserts were at the focal point of the series. This time, I wanted to find my subjects nearer, from my own personal sentiments. I wanted to create something frank, and channel my own thoughts and emotions from the past six months. The importance of nature, everyday life as well as animal and human encounters was emphasised in the creation of the works.
In the formal language I strived for the same immediacy as in my last exhibition, through clear and graphic solutions. The technique in all the new works is ink and pencil. With them, I have created precise and detailed texture surfaces to the images. Light is always brighter in relation to shadow – I have added white vinyl sticker cut in different shapes to many of the works as a contrast to the ink.
In general, my artistic practice consists of diverse projects and working techniques. They give way to different creative impulses and a possibility to try and carry out very different ideas and subjects. Although there might be big differences between the projects, I aim to create continuity through them, and a cohesive visual world to my work.
Artek is dear to me. While working on this small series of works, my goal was that it both fits in the Helsinki store and brings its own little addition to the space. Accustomed to working in a white, empty gallery space, it’s inspiring to see the works in an environment where they are in dialogue with other objects.

PATTERN DESIGN FOR THE TRAM STOP SHELTERS IN TAMPERE |
Pattern design for the tram stop shelters in Tampere. 2021.
The tram stop shelters, designed by Idis Design, has the main role in the project. A subtle & discreet side role is played by the prints, designed by me. Their mission is to support, to bring an extra layer and to be in dialogue with the shelters (+the wooden benches).
There are two styles present in the project: The more industrial design of the shelters and the more organic handprint of the patterns. On the back walls a straight line is placed, to bring a certain lightness, transparency and airiness to the overall impression of the shelters.
The patterns are printed on nearly all the tram stops in the city. It is important for the shelters to blend in, in diverse, urban environments. I hope different people will find the shelters to be a pleasant and natural part of their daily lives. |
